Judge Nelms has been a bankruptcy judge for the Northern District of Texas, Fort Worth Division, since November 2004.  He took the bench after working for twenty years in the bankruptcy and commercial litigation sections of Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal, L.L.P. in Dallas.  Judge Nelms served in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 1978 to 1984.  While in the Army, he acted as a prosecutor and defense counsel in courts martial while assigned to Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Clayton, Panama.  For three years, Judge Nelms served as an adjunct professor at SMU School of Law, where he taught a practice skills course based on the bankruptcy of the Texas Rangers baseball club.  He is also a co-author of the Collier Handbook for Trustees and Debtors in Possession.
